Economy features include more efficient aerodynamics, taller gear ratios in third, fourth and fifth and regenerative breaking. A stop-start system and low resistance tyres also feature.

Two other Golf variants will be made available in September by VW alongside the BlueMotion. Both feature the same 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine, with an 89bhp and a 104bhp edition on offer.

The more powerful model will be available with the option of the DSG seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The economy range VW Golf prices start at £15,305, with the Golf BlueMotion starting at £17,165.

VW has also confirmed plans to launch a second phase of Golf BlueMotion models, with CO2 output of 99g/km and combined fuel economy of more than 75mpg. These models will be available later this year.
