54 per cent of 500 sales happen outside of Fiat's home territory

Fiat is selling more 500s outside of Italy than inside, the first time this has happened with any of the firm's cars according to a company boss.

Lorenzo Sistino said that 54 per cent of Fiat 500s are being sold outside of Italy, the first time this has happened in the firm’s 110 year history.

This figure could increase when the 500 goes on sale in the US in 2011. Fiat has pledged to sell the car as part of its new alliance with Chrysler, but it hasn’t confirmed an official on-sale date or any sales targets.

Fiat has just expanded the 500 range with the addition of a Convertible, and this follows the recent sports-orientated Abarth model.
