Seat supermini first to all-new VW group 1.6-litre common-rail unit

The Seat Ibiza will be first in line for the VW group’s newest diesel engine, a 1.6-litre common-rail unit.

The 103bhp, 184lb ft unit will be available in the range-topping Seat Ibiza Sport in both five-door and three-door forms from July.

The new engine – the first common-rail unit to be fitted to a Seat Ibiza – pumps out just 109g/km CO2, while combined fuel economy is 67.2mpg. Seat claims a 0-62mph time of 10.5sec and a top speed of 117mph.

The Seat Ibiza will beat the forthcoming VW Polo to the engine by some months, since VW’s latest supermini won’t arrive in the UK until this November.

Seat hasn’t yet confirmed prices for the new common-rail diesel Seat Ibiza.
