Volvo V50 2.0D Sport review - verdict

Volvo V50 2.0D Sport

Test Date 29 May 2006  Price When New £20,795

Verdict

 7 stars out of 10

The V50 is a capable and likeable small estate. It’s not anything like as sporting as its makers would suggest (even if you plump for the full house T5-spec model), but by Volvo’s traditionally far from dynamic standards it’s a good step forward. Moreover it looks great and, powered by the diesel engine offers decent performance and excellent economy.
Indeed its case looks very convincing, at least until you think about the BMW 320d Touring that not a lot more money will buy. Then you’ll understand why we think the V50 is good, but still not quite up to the standards of the very best in the class. Even so, as an alternative to the mainly German hegemony, it’s a sensible and attractive alternative.
