Verdict
It's a good car, the Tiguan. Even a couple of years down the line, if someone says they are thinking about buying one, we can imagine responding with muted approval.
Certainly, it ticks the box labelled ‘Touareg-lite’ which is what VW had in mind for it; it has a comfortable and nicely assembled interior, looks like a traditional SUV and drives rather well. Its on-road dynamics, fidgety ride aside, are very competent.
But the current TDI engine is just too gruff next to the latest alternatives. And then there’s that something that’s more difficult to put a finger on. It’s the reason why the Golf Plus and Touran are rather forgettable, when the Touareg and Golf are not. It’s something that keeps a car near the front of buyers’ minds, regardless of how near the top of the class it is. Some cars have it, some don’t. And the Tiguan is a little bit wanting.
