Verdict
It has been a long time since Vauxhall had a large family car that was so competitive, not just on objective levels such as price, spaciousness and refinement, but on so many subjective levels, too.
Here, at last, is a Vauxhall that can hold its own with the best in its class — and with much of the class above — when it comes to exterior design and perceived interior quality. Here, too, is a large Vauxhall that’s got more to offer the driver than just the ability to ply motorways in comfort.
While it falls a little short of the Mondeo’s lofty dynamic standards, the Insignia steers more precisely and handles more athletically than any non-sporting Vectra ever did.
We’d still take the Mondeo for its greater driver appeal, but the Insignia is competitive enough in this area — and most others — that the gap between the Vauxhall and Ford contenders hasn’t been this tight in nearly 20 years.
