Road Test
Vauxhall Carlton Lotus 4dr
Test Date 28 November 1990
Price When New £48,000
Verdict
The Lotus Carlton is, of course, dominated by its vastly powerful and impressive engine.
But far from being a wicked, fire-breathing monster, it is as gentle and benign as a pussycat.
In the end, that is both the car’s greatest strength and weakness. It is the iron fist in a velvet glove.
The problem is that the driver can get only so involved – with its dull sounding engine, ponderous gearchange, feel-less steering and heavily damped responses, it is a little short on aural and tactile stimulation.
