Verdict
None of its rivals can match the all-round competence of the Toyota. Honda’s CRX coupé might beat it on fuel consumption, but its performance is less impressive than that of the Toyota and its ride and handling less supple. Fiat’s mid-engined X1/9 is surely the inspiration behind the MR2 but, though cheaper, it lacks the Toyota’s performance and economy. If cost is your limiting factor, then the Fiat seems a good bet. If not, then it’s well worth having a look at the MR2, which sets new standards in a number of areas, and is enormous fun to drive.
