Verdict
The Avensis has been improved massively by the new D4-D engine. What was a rather run of the mill offering with only a gutless 114bhp 2.0-litre diesel offering now feels rejuvenated and, if not quite up to the class best, at least a worthy class contender. When fitted with the forthcoming 175bhp diesel it may even given the establishment best sellers more than a little to think about.
