Road Test
Skoda Octavia vRS Hatchback
Test Date 22 March 2006
Price When New £17,955
Verdict
Bigger, faster and better to drive than its predecessor, the new Octavia vRS should be a runaway success. But the game has moved on, with new and stronger competition eating into the Octavia's price advantage. It is still the cheapest and most versatile hot hatch, but the margin of advantage in these areas is no longer so great as to compensate for the vRS's lack of verve. As a hatchback, it ultimately disappoints, but as an estate it makes far more sense: for the money, nothing can touch it for its combination of space and pace.
