Road Test
Seat Leon 1.6 Reference
Test Date 29 May 2006
Price When New £12,581
Verdict
We quite liked the Leon, though we’d probably choose either the 2.0-litre petrol or 2.0-litre diesel as the optimum powerplant for such a car. With the low powered 1.6 under the bonnet, it does feel a little gutless.
Even so, the car looks good and, once underway, it works well as a conventional family hatch. It’s not trying to be clever and, in many ways, therein lies the root of its appeal.
Yet for all its competence and ability, this is not a sporting car in the way that Seat would like you to see it. In fact its real appeal lies in offering a better-looking, cut-price route into Golf ownership and, in that role it feels very comfortable indeed.
