Verdict
The Saab 9-3 TiD is the kind of car that quietly impresses rather than seizes the heartstrings. A diesel 9-3 is now a very competent car, offering impressive performance and realistic running and ownership costs, but it fails to excel in any one key area. The new engine means that seeking an alternative to the ubiquitous German prestige marques doesn’t require such a large compromise.
But even so, the driver involvement, extra polish and high quality of the opposition remain too strong to allow the 9-3 to seriously challenge the usual order.
