Renault Mégane Renaultsport 225 review - verdict

Renault Megane 2.0T Renaultsport

Test Date 18 May 2004  Price When New £19,500

Verdict

 7 stars out of 10

Perhaps the Mégane’s biggest problem is the badge on its rump. We’ve come to associate the Renaultsport tag with genuinely focused drivers’ cars, but the 225 seems to have been designed with a subtly different set of priorities in mind. As a driver’s hatch it misses the mark because when you really push, its abilities start to fade. Yet as Alfa proved with the 147 GTA, there is certainly room in the market for a blindingly quick hatchback that is comfortable and downright desirable to own that can still provide decent entertainment when the roads get twisty. That the Mégane fills such a brief wins it plenty of our respect.
