Verdict
The fact that the new Laguna doesn’t get a universal thumbs up can be viewed in two distinctly different ways. Either we’re being overly harsh in saying it’s not as good as it should be, merely because it’s less good than the freakishly excellent Ford Mondeo, or Renault has failed to hit the bullseye. And the truth is it’s probably a bit of both.
There is much about the new Laguna that we admire, not least its fine cabin quality and impressive high-speed refinement. Same goes for the superb 100,000 mile three year warranty.
Overall, though, it’s impossible not to notice the weaknesses. Fact is the new Laguna isn’t as refined, doesn’t ride or handle as well as and lacks visual flair beside the Mondeo.
So although it represents a huge step forwards in most areas compared with its predecessor, it’s simply not as good as the real competition in 2007. It’s a good car, no question, but at the same time not quite good enough.
