Verdict
The crux of this test is that Porsche has somehow managed to make its fastest production car feel like a 600bhp Boxster. For the engineers charged with rendering such power useable (in the broadest possible sense) and for the majority of us, that is the Carrera GT’s single greatest achievement. And yet, for some, the process of sanitation when applied to something as deliberately esoteric as a supercar, is a crime in itself. They would argue that Porsche has gone one step too far and that for all its approachability, the very essence of an ultra-car — surely the ‘super’ moniker no longer does justice to this new breed
of vehicle — lies in its outrageous appeal.
That would be to miss the point of the GT entirely, though. This is
a production Porsche, a car designed to sit at the top of a range of
unparalleled sports cars, a car destined to showcase the kind of technology available in future 911 and Boxster variants; something with broader responsibilities than an Enzo or a Zonda. In the next few months, much will be written about the tricky clutch and people will doubtless snipe at the ‘carry-over’ instrument binnacle. But when the voices settle, the verdict will remain unequivocal: the Carrera GT is the best supercar ever made, and probably the most exciting road car in history.
