Mitsubishi i review - verdict

Mitsubishi i 660cc

Test Date 11 July 2007  Price When New £9,239

Verdict

 7 stars out of 10

There is a huge amount to like about the i and, by introducing it to the UK, Mitsubishi is proving that small, green cars can be clever and even funky.

For a certain type of person it will be perfect — expect to see them driving around the well heeled areas of big cities soon. But for all its in-town attraction, it’s hard to see the i as being really suited for life outside the urban sprawl. Even the most dedicated downsizer would have difficulty justifying one as an only car, which does seem to defeat the object somewhat.

Like the Audi A2, the i seems to be running the risk of being an ultimately doomed endeavour. It’s hard to see beyond the £9000 price, certainly. For buyers of city cars, price is an important factor and the i’s appeal will be further limited by the fact that it enters a crowded marketplace costing far more — even adjusted for spec — than some equally frugal rivals. It deserves to succeed, but whether it gets a chance to is another matter.
