Verdict
The sheer appeal of the SL is extraordinary: it has so much to offer that it’s impossible not to hail it as one of the most complete sports cars ever built. But, thankfully for the opposition, it isn’t completely flawless. Grabbed by the scruff of its neck it does an admirable job, but ultimately can’t hide its weight, and those interior trim gripes detract from the car’s appeal.
But there’s enough engineering quality to make you forget these very quickly. The SL is a rare treat; a German car whose technology doesn’t intimidate, but adds to its personality.
