Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Sport review - verdict

Verdict
The new C-class always performs strongly but rarely exceptionally. It represents a huge step forward over the car it replaces and a sizeable closing of the gap between it and its propeller-badged nemesis. It looks exactly what it is: a high-quality, capable and likeable new car from a manufacturer showing every sign of returning to the top of its game.
But will Mercedes be happy that the silver medal remains around its neck? We doubt it, for this is still not the 3-series crusher it hoped to design. But we welcome Mercedes’ decision to make the C-class so much more dynamic and applaud the boldness of its execution. It may not be the car that takes Mercedes past BMW in this class, but do not doubt that it’s not only on the right road, but also closing fast.
