Verdict
It’s not often we test a car that falls so far short that it would be hard to recommend even if you fell in love with its looks.
Which isn’t to say that the Avenger is merit-free, because it isn’t. It’s undeniably cheaper than most of its rivals — although that doesn’t make it good value. It’s also pretty roomy and practical, its rides well and handles adequately, it looks different and has a good stereo.
The VW diesel engine performs, too. But that engine is far too noisy for a car of any price, never mind one costing £15,995.
And the cabin feels at least two decades off the pace. Dodge might argue that this is because it has to sell its cars for so much less at home, but then so does Honda, whose new US Accord, costing just £500 more, has an interior that’s from another era compared with the Avenger’s. And that era is now. The Dodge Avenger, however, doesn’t belong to it.
