Verdict
The 525i offers everything in isolation: entertaining handling, a spacious and flexible cabin, a refined and eager engine and a fine transmission. But as a combination it falls slightly wide of the mark: hefty weight, peaky power delivery and a lazy gearbox serving only to confuse each other. Pick the right engine and transmission, however, and the five-door Five makes a compelling case for itself.
