Road Test

Audi A5 3.0 TDI Quattro

Test Date 25 July 2007  Price When New £33,735

Verdict

 8 stars out of 10

That the A5 is an exceptionally competent and beautifully finished car comes as no real surprise; for Audi to produce anything but would be an absolute shocker.

The A5’s revelation is just how comprehensively Audi has nailed the coupe desirability factor, both inside and out. For those familiar with the Audi styling rhetoric, the A5 may look slightly confused, but in the metal the styling simply works, and most importantly looks sufficiently different from its saloon relatives, something that can’t be said of the BMW 3-series coupe.

Better still the A5’s talents run deeper than the surface, the new platform bringing real dynamic advancements, particularly in ride terms. BMW may still have the edge, but the A5 is no longer burdened with the remote and frustrating drive of old Audis.

In short, it’s good enough for even an enthusiast to consider it a credible rival to the genre-defining 3-series coupe, and for BMW that should be reason to worry.
