Verdict
The Vantage is a landmark model in Aston Martin’s history. It is one of the best cars Aston has ever produced, pointing to a bright future for the company. Although the six-cylinder DB7 remains in production we can see no reason to save £8000 and buy it instead of the Vantage. Sure it isn’t cheap, but look back through your brown and curled copies of Autocar and you’ll see that the Vantage is something of a bargain.
Aston could have merely dropped the new V12 into the underpowered DB7 and produced the required performance, but instead it has chosen to do a much more comprehensive job The supercharged six-cylinder engine sounded an extremely apt powerplant for the new Aston but in reality it fell somewhat short.
The Vantage outguns and outbrakes its junior sibling and is much more comfortable into the bargain. Ford has done something very special with this car and has said that it intends Aston to be a showcase for its cutting edge technology. The Vantage certainly bears this out.
