Verdict
Until a 1.8-litre petrol arrives later this year, the JTD is the cheapest GT available, and unless your Alfa must have a V6 it’s the pick of the range: quicker than the £21,495 JTS on the road, cheaper to buy and run and just as characterful.
The better-driving (but more expensive) BMW 320 Cd is still the enthusiast’s choice, but the Alfa gets surprisingly close. When the inevitable 2.4 JTD arrives, it should be even closer.
