Toyota MR2 review - on the road

Toyota MR2 1.6 16v

Test date 13 March 1985  Price as tested £9,535

One of the MR2’s strongest points is its handling. Not only is the engine centrally mounted for a favourable weight distribution – 55.8 per cent rear, 44.2 per cent front – but the fuel tank runs under the centre tunnel between driver and passenger. Damping and spring rates are soft enough to give an excellent ride with superb bump absorption. At moderate speeds, handling is precise with only a small amount of understeer when cornering. The rack-and-pinion steering, with 3.3 turns lock-to-lock, is ideally geared to allow quick corrections and pleasantly light in urban driving. As speed is increased, understeer becomes more noticeable, but the MR2 digs in with exceptional grip. On the limit the rear begins to break away very gradually, giving the driver plenty of time to take corrective action. Overall the MR2 is very stable and aided in this area by the 55/45 per cent brake split in favour of the rear wheels.
