Skoda Roomster 2 1.4 16v review - on the road

Skoda Roomster 1.4 16v 2

Test date 08 September 2006  Price as tested £11,545

If the Roomster has built a convincing case before even turning a wheel, its road manners will have you sold. The driving position is set low, although the seats themselves could do with more support and the movement of every major control is smooth, light and well balanced.

Whichever of the six engine options you choose (1.2, 1.4 or 1.6-litre petrol; a 1.4-litre diesel in two states of tune or a 1.9-litre diesel), there’s real satisfaction from driving a Roomster. The 1.2 might struggle on longer trips, especially loaded, but the sweet, hard-working 16-valve 88bhp 1.4 tested here should prove sufficient.

At the track we achieved a maximum of 102mph, but in the real world it’ll cruise happily at 80mph with power in reserve, although the short fifth gear does translate to a buzzy 4000rpm. Across our touring route we averaged 42.1mpg and an economical 36.7mpg overall.

The biggest surprise comes with the handling, which surpasses anything you might reasonably expect. Capable of carrying a payload of 515kg (more than an Octavia estate), the Roomster’s suspension is firm. Add to that a long wheelbase and broad track and the Roomster changes direction eagerly and grips admirably. Throw in accurate, nicely weighted steering, a supple ride and you have a car that delivers more smiles that its image would lead you to expect.
