BMW Z4 3.0 sDrive35i review - on the road

BMW Z4 3.0 sDrive35i

Test date 02 June 2009  Price as tested £39,450

Despite tasking the new Z4 with a broader remit that encompasses the softer side of roadster duties, BMW has not overlooked performance.

Fitted with the optional seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the sDrive35i sprints from rest to 60mph in just 5.1sec, matching the time we recorded for the outgoing Z4 M Coupé.

Underpinning that impressive performance is the now-familiar twin-turbo straight six, unchanged from its applications in the 1-series and 3-series.

It may not have quite the same zingy top end as BMW’s naturally aspirated sixes, but as an engine to tackle the variety of conditions our congested roads present, it is difficult to fault. With 295lb ft of torque available from 1300rpm, the Z4 builds speed effortlessly.

For a turbocharged engine, there is good throttle response and a willingness to rev, if only to a relatively low 6800rpm red line.

The efficiency of the DCT gearbox also contributes to the performance potential. A launch control function means perfect starts are only a few button presses away, getting the Z4 from rest to 30mph in just 2.2sec, and (as with all twin-clutch arrangements) having the next gear pre-selected boosts performance through the gears.

Moving from its Comfort setting to Sport+ quickens the shift speed and stops the gearbox from automatically changing up at the limiter.

Frustratingly, though, the gearbox will kick down where necessary under full throttle, irrespective of mode. Although we still prefer the simplicity of one paddle shifter for up and one for down, BMW has arranged the dual-function paddles logically; you pull back to go up a gear and push to go down.

We also have no complaint with the way the Z4 sounds. From the crackle at start-up to the metallic-edged bark under load, the Z4 seeks to entertain.

The steering’s general weight and accuracy is good but just off straight ahead there’s a dead patch, and here it lacks linearity.
