Despite significant torque, this 159 takes 9.5sec to reach 60mph. The 0-100mph time of 30sec is over 7.0sec slower than we managed in a BMW 320d. Although the engine is always smooth and quiet, you’ll be surprised at how much time you spend with the accelerator crushed to the carpet.

At least economy is impressive: Alfa claims 47.1mpg on the combined cycle, and even with hard driving we managed to average 37.1mpg. Although the six-speed manual gearbox requires more effort to shift than a lot of modern transmissions, it rewards with an accurate movement. The small leather ball and stubby lever feel right.

The 159 instantly strikes the right note on the road. The low-speed ride is taut but pliant and the steering – just 2.3 turns lock to lock – provides a progressive build-up and natural response.

It rides well at low and high speeds, with only larger intrusions jolting into the cabin. Wind noise levels are acceptable, and were it not for an excessive amount of road noise on certain surfaces, the 159 would make a very relaxing tourer.

The wide track and generously-sized tyres mean grip levels are very high. This is a car that you can lean on in a bend, confident that the front end will stick and that the rear axle has no nasty surprises in store. The biggest transformation is in the damping.

Although the 159 doesn’t have the iron control of a 3-series, you no longer come upon a sudden dip with gritted teeth. Damping control at the front has been enormously improved and the sump guard is now far safer along a typically tortuous British B-road.

Only the brakes disappoint. There’s nothing wrong with their power, but pedal feel is soft, with little hint of the effort being deployed below, making it hard to modulate a quick stop from speed.
