Road Test

Toyota MR2

Test date 13 March 1985  Price as tested £9,535

An overall consumption figure of 29.1mpg is highly creditable, considering the sports gearing and high-revving nature of the twin-cam unit; Toyota claims 34.9mpg for the urban cycle. Fuel tank capacity is a rather meagre nine gallons, which limits the car’s range to 240 miles between fills if the fuel gauge is to be believed. In reality, there are still 1.4 gallons remaining in the tank with the gauge registering zero. For such a small car, the MR2 is surprisingly practical: the doors open wide to allow good entry without resorting to special manoeuvres. Inside, the overall colour scheme is predominantly black, but the standard, full-length sunroof adds airy relief to what could have become a claustrophobic cabin. The MR2 is an easy car to drive, a point backed up by the lightweight controls which include the smooth and precise gearchange. The only slight niggle is in rear visibility, which is limited somewhat by the large rear spoiler.
