Morris Mini Minor review - living

Morris Mini Minor de Lux

Test date 28 August 1959  Price as tested £537

The car appears low; inside, however, there is as much space, or more, than in many larger cars. Even with the driver’s seat fully back – where drivers of average height and above will require it – there is still enough space for the knees of the passenger behind.

In spite of sitting so well back, the driver’s view is excellent. Wind noise was notably low and conversation was easy.

Fuel consumption, of great importance in a small family car, worked out at 40.1mpg over the 1422 miles of the test, including the performance testing, and about 300 miles while carrying three passengers. Driven hard with only one up, figures of around 50mpg were frequently recorded. The 5.5-gallon tank enables 200 to 250 miles to be covered. However, after filling to the neck, petrol fumes entered the car and persisted until the level dropped appreciably.
