Overall fuel consumption worked out at 22mpg – a 0.6mpg improvement over the previous car, which did not have overdrive. A range of nearly 200 miles is possible when the 10-gallon fuel tank is filled, but the gauge still indicated quarter-full when our test car ran out. The driving position is a fair compromise for people of average height. Visibility is excellent in spite of the relative shallowness of the windscreen.
At 90mph in overdrive there is a little mechanical noise, but appreciably more wind roar than at 80mph, so one has to increase conversation volume. Draught sealing is excellent when the de luxe hood – well worth its extra cost of just under £5 – is raised.
