Road Test
Volvo XC90 D5 SE
Test date 19 February 2003
Price as tested £34,775
All the ingredients were present for Volvo to enter the sports utility vehicle market long ago; an obsession with safety and practicality and a reputation as a maker of durable, large estate cars. But companies like BMW and Mercedes-Benz took the initiative with the X5 and ML ranges. They caught Volvo napping, and soon the Swedes were left with slumping sales, particularly in America. And so enter the XC90, which aims to combine car-like dynamics, MPV-practicality and some off-road ability; Volvo calls the XC90 an ‘all-roads vehicle’, not a pure off-roader.
