Road Test

Volvo V50 2.0D Sport

Test date 29 May 2006  Price as tested £20,795

What most distinguishes this newest Volvo estate, the V50, is how utterly unlike a traditional Volvo estate it is. If you always thought the Volvo estate as a kind of road going freighter – large, ugly and quite unfeasibly capacious – then you will need to prepare yourself for the V50. It’s small, conspicuously attractive and one of the least effective load carriers money can buy.

But this need not matter – it’s shaped the way it is for styling purposes and to create just enough of the illusion of practicality to sell to those who want Volvo strength and a good street image but need just a smidge of extra carrying capacity.
