Volvo S60R review
Volvo S60 R AWD Road Test
Test date 06 August 2003
Price as tested £34,965
When the original T5 burst onto an unsuspecting market in 1992, the Volvo name entered the lexicon of car enthusiasts the world over. Here was a product from a manufacturer known for stodgy estates that could be mentioned in the same breath as Europe’s finest sporting marques.
Now the Swedes have their eyes on Audi’s 340bhp V8-powered S4 and BMW’s iconic M3. At £34,145, the S60R saloon undercuts the cheapest of its main rivals by £2010 but that alone won’t be enough to guarantee success in such a cut-throat market, among products and badges that have such a cult following.
The R will have to meet its rivals head on in every category to be taken seriously or risk being sent back to Gothenburg with its tail between its legs.
