Volkswagen and Porsche developed their off-roaders together and hit on the same expedient for marking them out from their well-established rivals; equip each with an engine with unanswerable outputs, and make it available from day one.
No teasing, no waiting. So Porsche gave the Cayenne its 444bhp turbocharged V8 petrol, and Volkswagen gave the Touareg the engine tested here, the most powerful diesel yet fitted to a production car.
