Road Test

Vauxhall Tigra CDTi Sport

Test date 08 March 2005  Price as tested £16,185

For Security and solid feel of steel folding roof. Looks good, fun to drive

AgainstVery, very slow and only has two seats where rivals offer 2+2

Like today’s Tigra, the first Vauxhall/Opel to bear the name was based on the Corsa supermini. Over 37,000 of the 2+2 coupés found UK homes from 1994 to 2000.

GM brands have a history of creating niche models from ordinary underpinnings. In 1968 Opel dropped a pretty coupé body onto Kadett running gear to make the GT. In the 1970s Vauxhall turned staid Viva into fastback Firenza and Opel created the popular Manta from the Ascona, while the ’89 Calibra was a Cavalier in drag.
