You have to hand it to Toyota: it may be late to embrace a technology but, when it does, it does so with never less than total commitment. The main interest in this Avensis lies under its bonnet where Toyota’s all-new D-4D motor – the first in a new generation of diesel donkeys – is found. It has provided Toyota’s worthy but dull family saloon, hatch and estate with a new appeal and a fresh lease of life. Question is, is that enough to let it get onto terms with long established European diesel players, or is it too little come too late?
