As the offspring of a brief affair between Mercedes and watch maker Swatch, the Micro Compact Car Smart looked set to revolutionise the city car concept. With the chic of a fashionable watchmaker and the engineering might of the Stuttgart star behind it, it seemed certain to succeed.However, the Smart’s stability was found to be questionable, and MCC was forced to rework the car before its launch. Six months later the Smart was launched to a sceptical public; though not in the UK, where it remains available only through private importers. But for all its alleged failings, the Smart is worthy of study. And, judging by the plethora of traders who are importing the Smart for sale in the UK, there are plenty who agree.
