Road Test

Smart Forfour 1.5 CDi Pulse

Test date 09 November 2004  Price as tested £10,995

For Mercedes-owned Smart, the Forfour takes the company into an uncharted and more mainstream segment – superminis – in contrast to the niches it has carved with the Fourtwo, the Roadster and the Coupé. Despite being a more conventional kind of Smart, the Forfour looks the part, from the smiley grille to the plastic body panels and the fabric-topped dash it shares with other models.

The Forfour joins the Fiat Idea, Vauxhall Meriva and Renault Modus as a new breed of five-door supermini, but they will need to be good to better our current class favourite, the Honda Jazz.
