Saab 99 Turbo review

Saab 99 2.0 Turbo

Test date 11 March 1978  Price as tested £7,850

Saab’s decision to opt for turbocharging was a logical one. They had the need to maintain performance after meeting the strict emissions control standards in California, and decided that a six-cylinder unit was not the answer. The turbocharger improves emissions, but also provides a more satisfactory route to extra power. Traditionally, turbochargers have worked much more efficiently at high engine revs, but Saab opted for a much smaller, lighter turbocharger than had been seen in previous car installations with the aim of getting boost from much lower down the power range.
