Road Test

Saab 9-3 Convertible (02-) 2.0t Vector 2dr

Test date Tuesday, August 26, 2003  Price as tested £28,589

Since its launch in 1987 Saab’s convertible has enjoyed an image and desirability that its quality and dynamics couldn’t entirely justify. Saab was very grateful; it charged a hefty premium for the 900 and 9-3 convertible over the saloons, pricing them right alongside their better-made, better-handling BMW and Audi rivals. It still outsold them both, and sales of the soft-top propped up the old 9-3 in its dying days. Saab will simply want the new 9-3 convertible to match the old one on for sales and image, but it has stiff competition from the new Audi A4 and Mercedes CLK convertibles and the revised BMW 3 Series.
