Price as tested £15,135
For Refinement, build, prestige, comfort
Against Cost, thirst, attention to design details
In most people's eyes the Rolls-Royce Corniche is the absolute ultimate in cars. Not just a Rolls-Royce, it is a coach built two-door coupé, commanding a current list price of just over £15,000 and at present in such short supply that delivery is quoted at over three years. At pre-crisis auctions, prices as high as £28,000 have been reached for second-hand examples, although this is a long way from the real market value of around £17,000. Like a piece of select property or a rare antique, a Rolls-Royce is an appreciating investment and as such can be readily justified by company accountants.
When the Corniche was launched three years ago it followed the lines of the previous Shadow-based HJ Mulliner, Park Ward two-door model, but was given more of a separate identity by using a special engine developing 10 per cent more power. The actual output is still undisclosed, but since the capacity was increased from 6.2 to 6.7-litres in 1970, the claim of "adequate" has been fully justified.
