Renault Mégane Renaultsport 225 review

Renault Megane 2.0T Renaultsport

Test date 18 May 2004  Price as tested £19,500

For Huge pace, refinement, build quality, usability

Against Gearchange, steering feel, Focus RS still more fun

The turbo technology that Renault developed for its F1 engines in the early 1980s led to a series of outrageously rapid blown road cars later that decade — from the 5 Gordini and later GT to the less famous 9, 11 and 21 Turbos. In the 1990s the company turned its attention to normally aspirated engines, creating legends such as the Clio Williams and Clio 172, but in the segment above Renault hasn’t had a contender since the 19 16v dropped out of production 10 years ago. Unlike the Mégane 225, the hottest 19 relied on an excellent chassis to make up for its modest power output.
