Physically the GT owes its very existence to an unnamed race project that was intended to bring yet another Le Mans victory in 2000, but was cancelled due to rule changes. The company’s first shin-high sportster was the gorgeous 904/6 GTS of 1964. It may have only had 207bhp but a kerbweight of 640kg still gave 323bhp per tonne. Only one of the seminal Le Mans-winning 917s, to which the GT’s wooden gearknob pays homage, was ever a road car, and the last time Porsche built a supercar it was called the 959: 450bhp, four-wheel drive and 197mph in 1985.
