Porsche 928 review

Porsche 928 4.4 Auto

Test date 28 October 1978  Price as tested £19,657

Although it appeared 16 months after the first front-engined Porsche (the 924), the 928 is actually the first front-engine design from Weissach. Thoughts about it began early in the decade when it became obvious that future needs to improve comfort and refinement would force Porsche to depart from their preference for air-cooled engines behind the driver. The oil crisis of 1973 and the link with Volkswagen-Audi put the 924 idea ahead, with its use of some Volkswagen components along similar lines to the then-stillborn 928.
