Reputations can be hard to live up to in the car business. Take the task facing the Peugeot 407 Coupé, the new and distinctive replacement for the much-loved 406 Coupé. Its Pininfarina-styled predecessor turned heads (and opened wallets) from the moment it wowed the Paris motor show in 1996. A decade and well over 100,000 sales later, it is a difficult act to follow, particularly as the market for mainstream coupés has never been tougher.
That said, there are still plenty of grounds on which the new car can impress. For all its good looks, the 406 Coupé’s appeal was not so compelling on the move. Dynamically it never quite lived up to the brilliant standard of Peugeots of the time, and unless you opted for the extravagant V6, the petrol engines were lacklustre, too. With the 407’s independent suspension, a sleek all-new body and high-tech diesel engine, the new Coupé now has the ingredients to deliver on paper.
We’re testing the 2.7 HDi Coupé in GT specification. Admittedly this is the most expensive model but, for reasons we’ll explain, it is the pick of the range.
