For Dynamics, ride quality
Against Ordinary engine, spongy brakes
First shown as a concept at the 1994 Turin Motor Show, the original Mercedes SLK drew cues from famous Mercs past and was a hit before it had even touched the showroom floor. Production cars arrived two years later and to such demand that there were huge waiting lists. Long-awaited manual gearboxes and V6 engines were ushered in with a facelift in 2000, along with suspension revisions designed to stem criticism of the original car’s uninvolving chassis. The SLK reached its performance peak in 2001 with the AMG SLK32. Its supercharged V6 delivered 349bhp and 0-100mph in just 11.2sec.
