Since its launch in North America last autumn, the Lexus has been a great success, but its maker Toyota is taking no chances. You have to hunt out the chassis plate before you find the word ‘Toyota’ on the car. The cream of Europe’s big saloons may have been a pushover in the US, but they’re unlikely to lie down over here. Not to a Toyota, at any rate. The publicity machine is calling Lexus ‘the world’s finest luxury performance saloon’, and saying that it is ‘unlike any other car in the world’. Can those claims be sustained?
