Toyota certainly scared the established luxury brands when it launched Lexus in 1989 with the LS400. Within a year it had created a brand from scratch, and the LS was soon followed by a BMW 5-series rival, the GS, the 3-series-battling IS200 and the RX300 4x4, which has become a huge sales success.
Available with six- and eight- cylinder engines, the rear-drive GS reinforced the reputation for refinement created by the LS, but also added a touch of sporting appeal.
