For Flexible, practical interior; engine flexibility; excellent ride and handling
Against Unremarkable fuel economy; gearbox’s occasional hesitancy; high prices
Ford’s S-Max instantly became our favourite MPV when it was launched in 2006, and four years on it remains, in our view, the best car in the segment. One suspects Ford knows how good it is, too, because here is its obligatory mid-life facelift and, by the standards of age-defying tucks, the ones the S-Max has been treated to are mild
Spot the difference? There are exterior changes, but you’d want a pre-facelift car alongside to spot them easily. Likewise, there are only minor tweaks to the interior.
The real news comes under the bonnet, where Ford’s range of engines has been given a thorough overhaul. The old 1.8-litre TDCi engine has been replaced by lower-powered versions of the PSA/Ford 2.0-litre unit. The real fireworks come in the petrols, which now include a 200bhp turbocharged powerplant mated to Ford’s dual-clutch automatic transmission (called Powershift).
Said to be capable of a 35mpg average and a 0-60mph time of a little over eight seconds, we are expecting good things. Can it improve on the standard it has already set?
