Road Test

Ford Fiesta (02-) 1.25 LX 3dr Hatchback

Test date 23 July 2003  Price as tested £9,245

When Ford revealed the new grown-up Fiesta to British buyers 18 months ago, it seemed they’d made a mistake and left the best engine off the options list.

The zippy 1.25-litre part-Yamaha designed four-pot was the pick of the old range, but Ford claimed it would have struggled with the extra weight of the fourth generation Fiesta’s body.

Buyers wanting petrol power would just have to choose between the 102bhp 1.6, the 80bhp multivalve 1.4 or the unrewarding 8-valve 69bhp 1.3. But now the 1.25 is back, ousting the old-tech 1.3 as the Fiesta’s entry-level power unit.
